Smart Rooms making WMC more efficient and connected

• By RJ Walters, Editor •

When West Michigan Conference Ministry Consultant Naomi Garcia broke her leg earlier this year it took her off the road and out of the churches she had regularly been advising.

But instead of waiting for it to heal or asking pastors and other church leaders to come to her, it was “virtually” a non-issue — as in one that could be electronically solved through the use of the Smart Room at the West Michigan Conference Center.

Utilizing a large high-definition screen and high-end Internet camera, Garcia has been doing several consultations per week with technology that is up and running in the Kalamazoo and Lansing Districts and should eventually be operating in the rest of the conference.

Utilizing Adobe’s Acrobat.com virtual conference application, districts have special access keys that allow clergy and conference leaders to set up an online meeting space almost anywhere there is an Internet connection.

Parties call in to an assigned conference line through their cell phones for the voice service and they can connect visually with the online application.

“When I think about the travel time it takes to get places and the difficulty of getting folks to me, it’s so much more convenient for them and I have everything I need with me and I don’t have to carry it anywhere,” said Garcia, who used to use the Smart Room sparingly, but now does several appointments a week via it. “If I just have my act together ahead of time I can (electronically) send them any handouts or documents I’ll be using and we’ll be all set.”

West Michigan Conference Director of Communications Mark Doyal said Smart Rooms can be a “huge cost savings for mileage the conference pays” and they are “helping us reach people better in a new way.”

Garcia said two churches who had never used the technology before were raving about it after meeting with her earlier in the month. They said they actually “preferred the Smart Room meeting and saw it as a good way to connect more often without having to talk for hours just because Garcia had made a long haul to visit.

Garcia said “actually seeing” people instead of just talking to them helps her be more perceptive about their needs.

“It helps a lot…and I can see their cues a little better,” she said. “(In a recent) meeting I had we just had the conference call with no webcam, but we were online for the notes I was taking, and it was much harder for me to read the silence and kind of figure out what was going on for them.”

Doyal said using Smart Rooms along with other conference amenities like the Michigan Area Resource Center is vital in keeping “the connection alive” among congregations.

'Miracle Day': Who will be your 12?

• By Mark Doyal, West Michigan Conference Director of Communications •

More than 2,000 years ago Jesus called upon 12 disciples to help Him spread the Good News. Today, that call is being celebrated through the invitation of 12 members from every church in the West Michigan Conference to attend the final day of Annual Conference.

“We are planning to witness a miracle on Saturday, June 4,” commented the Rev. Bill Johnson, the Annual Conference Program Committee Chairperson. “We are praying for the arrival of 5,000 new faces to join us for an extraordinary day of worship, fellowship and connection with Jesus Christ and the Church.”

Pastors are being asked to attend “Miracle Saturday” with their designated lay member to Annual Conference and then extend the invitation to 10 or more congregants they feel are ready to grow in faith.

The conference has arranged for the extra people, so local churches are encouraged to invite even more than 12 to attend.

The theme of the day is “Take My Hand: Engaging the poor in ministry”

It features worship with the Rev. Rudy Rasmus, the dynamic pastor of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston, Tex.

Rasmus, who ministers to over 12,000 people (4,000 of the total were homeless or formerly homeless) is also an author, regular contributor to Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine and hosts a street ethics program on SiriusXM radio.

Rasmus has also worked with singer and actress Beyonce’ Knowles, a member of his congregation, to create a multi-million dollar program to address poverty and starvation.

Also featured on Saturday will be Thomas Kemper, a former missionary in Brazil and current General Secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries.

Kemper has strong United Methodist roots in his native Germany and broad ecumenical and international experience. He will speak on how to transform our work with the poor from charity to engagement.

Following the talk, everyone will be invited to attend one of more than 50 mini-events that will focus on how putting faith into action. The events have local, regional, national and international themes, depending on the interests of each attendee.

A ministry fair will also take place simultaneously, introducing new members to the hundreds of mission areas of the church.

Pastors and church leaders are being asked to personally invite individuals they feel are ready for spiritual growth.

These may be individuals who are new to the church or who have only been involved in activities at the local church level.

Organizers are particularly seeking those who have not been to district or conference events before.

Groups or individuals can register at www.westmichiganconference.org.

The cost of the day is $18 per person, which includes meal accommodations.

The day is included for anyone registered for Annual Conference. The Program Committee is encouraging local churches to support attendance through scholarships or grants and to consider joining other local churches to rent buses to reduce transportation costs.

New dates announced for 2011 West Michigan Annual Conference

By Mark Doyal, West Michigan Conference Director of Communications

The West Michigan Annual Conference Program Committee has announced new dates for the 43rd Session of Annual Conference.

The 2011 Annual Conference session will now open on Wednesday, June 1 and conclude on Saturday, June 4, 2011 on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.

As part of the schedule change the Program Committee also announced that Saturday’s Annual Conference session is being redesigned to attract more than 5,000 laity from across the conference.

Each local church will be invited to welcome 12 additional members to attend an exciting “drive-in day.” Saturday’s session is expected to offer amazing worship, top speakers, fellowship, workshops and more.

“Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world will be more effective as we share this incredible time of worship, fellowship and growth with more of our members,” commented Program Committee Chair, Rev. Bill Johnson. ”The committee believes anytime there is the opportunity to grow our connection, our faith and church grows stronger too.”

The West Michigan Conference Director of Connectional Ministry, Rev. Benton Heisler agrees, stating the focus of the 2011 Annual Conference will be to engage in ministry with the poor. “

We have faith that this new schedule for Annual Conference will allow us to welcome many new faces to this important mission.”

The dates and times for Ordination, the Memorial Service and Marking Sacred Time during Annual Conference have not been established.

Details and a new schedule for Annual Conference will be released in the coming weeks.

Remembering the West Michigan Conference Chancellor

By Mark Doyal, West Michigan Conference Director of Communications

Ministry appears in many forms.

For some it means preaching from the pulpit; for others, conducting missionary work or managing the church nursery.

For Thomas Cooper Shearer, serving Jesus Christ meant quietly sharing his remarkable gift for understanding law.

Tom served as the West Michigan Conference Chancellor for nearly 17 years before passing away unexpectedly March 12. He was 72.

“His knowledge and love of the church, combined with his legal knowledge has been a blessing to our conference,” Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton said. “Tom was our ‘go-to guy’ and he provided a crucial and unique form of ministry through his professional services.”

The conference chancellor is a quiet, behind the scenes form of ministry.

Nominated by the bishop and elected at annual conference, the chancellor serves as the legal advisor to the bishop and the annual conference. As legal matters develop within the conference, local churches call their district superintendents and ultimately the bishop’s office for advice and guidance.

The bishop then often seeks counsel from the chancellor.
