Evidently tempting Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton with chocolate is one way to make a point at Detroit Annual Conference.
Encouraging the Michigan Area Bishop to come visit the Michigan Area Haiti Task Force table at Friday evening’s Ministry Fair, the Rev. Don Gotham waved a bag of chocolates in front of the Bishop as he took the podium at Dawson Auditorium.
“If you would like to have one of these fine chocolates Bishop, I would urge you to come enjoy one with others at our table,” he said. The Bishop smiled and inquired about having one immediately, but Gotham came back with a prudent response.
“But Bishop, good things come to those who wait,” he said.
Out came Keaton’s wallet and a five-dollar bill, earmarked for the conference’s Haiti Hot Lunch program.
The wait was over.
After showing a video that urged people to stop making excuses of why they can’t or won’t go on a mission to Haiti, Gotham issued the Michigan Area a challenge.
“We want there to be at least one clergy or laity from each congregation to go on a VIM mission to Haiti in the next five years,” he said.
More information about the Michigan Area Task Force, the programs it supports and how to donate is available at www.stovern.net/haiti.
Gotham said a brand new web site would be unveiled at www.mahtf.org in the near future.
